Fire Cider

This is concoction perfect for fighting off those fall & winter sick bugs!

The first time I tried fire cider I never thought I’d have it again. It’s called fire cider for a reason (yes, it’s spicy…that’s a good thing!) Until I realized how amazing I felt and I kicked my sickness to the curb. This magical concoction seemed too good to be true. I mean taking a spoonful of this spicy, fiery liquid and BAM I’ve pushed out the onset of a sore throat! Yep, you too will never go back until you’ve tried this.

What is fire cider? A tonic of infusing herbs, spices and a variation of ingredients mixed in like apple cider vinegar, horseradish, garlic, peppers and ginger. The purpose of the drink is to fight of sicknesses like the common cold, support digestion and boost the immune system. Once the ingredients have brewed for about a month in a large mason jar, the liquid will be strained and poured into a smaller jar and used by the spoonful.

Don’t worry, the babe didn’t eat any raw onions or jalapeños. Girl was just having so much fun talking about all these veggies and herbs! Plus, would you look at all these colors? If only these could be preserved for a table set up, I’d use it for Thanksgiving! And I was also thinking how incredible this combo would be in a roast or a curry!

So, my sister and I decided to make a batch of this together. She needed the emotional support and stability because last year her whole entire mason jar that had been brewing crashed on the floor! You will understand how tragic that is once you start making this. Yes, it’s a little of a lengthy process, but grab a friend and make an afternoon out of it. Like my mom always said, “Many hands make light work” and plus, it’s always more fun! We quadrupled the recipe because we wanted to have extra for some friends. Some of these ingredients can be found at your local grocery store, but others you may need to scout out a health food store or call ahead to see if they carry these items.

We adapted this recipe from Mommypotamus and Free People blog.

Fire Cider

This is concoction perfect for fighting off those fall & winter sick bugs!

Prep Time 15 minutes
Author Karis Alex

Ingredients

  • 1/2 gallon or more Raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup Horseradish root, grated
  • 1/2 cup White onion, chopped
  • 1/4 cup Ginger root, chopped
  • 1/4 cup Turmeric, chopped
  • 1 Jalapeño Pepper, chopped
  • 1 tbsp Cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp Black peppercorns
  • 2 Lemons, zest & juice
  • Several sprigs of fresh rosemary

Instructions

  1. Prepare all the ingredients by grating, dicing, testing and juicing as needed.

  2. Place all ingredients in a large mason jar with the lightest ingredients on the bottom and the heaviest on top. This will keep the lighter ingredients from floating.

  3. Pour apple cider vinegar over the roots/vegetables making sure that they are all covered. Put a cheese cloth on top and consider getting a weight to ensure the ingredients stay submerged in the apple cider vinegar for fermentation.
  4. Place the jar in a dark cupboard for one month. Strain with a cheese cloth and store liquid in a mason jar in the fridge. Discard the root/veggies in compost!

Meet Karis

Hey there! My name is Karis and I’m from Minnesota, although I don’t know anything about hot dishes, jello fruit salad, or canned casseroles. See, my Mom grew up in Japan and learned how to cook miso soup and fermented soybeans and sushi. So despite us living in the North, I was the kid who ate dried seaweed and brown rice and mochi bean paste for lunch instead of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches....
